With a magnificent motley mix of traditional barnburning breakdowns, hoedowns, jazz and bebop, a band that practices spellbinding wizardry with intoxicating music is none other than The Lawnmowers. When it comes to hardcore bluegrass/ newgrass, they surely take the top-of-the-mind share.
The Lawnmowers have everything a band could need to move the audience. Marked by an enduring list of virtuosos and master-instrumentalists, it has a very comprehensive approach to music and each song made is perfected in each aspect of song-making. One of the numbers where this perfection has come out the best is ‘White Freight-liner Blues’, - a truly wonderful bluegrass rendition. Other splendid numbers from the album include ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, a classy jazz version of Old Joe Clark and the peppy and up-tempo ‘Down the Road’. Even ‘Devil's Dream’ and a bluegrass interpretation of James Brown’s ‘I Feel Good’ are must-haves.
This album beyond doubt is a world class performance of bluegrass with a contemporary edge. Acting as the pillar of the musical tryst is the foreman himself, Doug Bull on bass, who is well-known on the country and rockabilly circuit for his hard driving bass style. But what marks the true wizardly is immaculate banjo from Dave Hellens and Robbie Long on guitar.
A true maharajah in his field, Dave can play the most smoothest to the most incredible tunes with an ease that will surely make you feel what he’s doing is child’s play. Adding a blitzkrieg of notes to this is Rob who maintains the rhythm like a rigid wall and often takes on the lead to with incendiary melodies. Even Tony Eyers on harmonica brings the ideal dose of skill and solidity to the band. And to top it all, what comes as the icing on the cake is the multi-instrumentalist Andrew Clermont who takes on the Fiddle & Mandolin leading the songs to an even higher platform of excitement, precision and euphoria.
The Lawnmowers truly have the strength and the proficiency to break free from mediocre and mainstream to make music that leaves its own mark and, above all, commands enduring respect. The promise they’ve brought to bluegrass is sure to multiply in time to come. Meanwhile, don’t miss this album - an initial step to their journey, which is sure to define the course of time and escalation of music.
