Product Information

Dya Singh's 'Sukhmani Sahib in music' is a landmark in his journey as a Sikh musician. It finally establishes him as a serious music exponent in the Sikh traditions. In this double album he has channeled his talents into the essential spirit of Sukhmani Sahib - the psalm of peace, and the spiritual intonations needed to create a deep timeless sensation. The main 'raag' (raga) used throughout the piece is the raag in which Guru Arjan Dev Ji recited it - Raag Gaudi Sukhmani. Other associated morning raags have also been used to compliment the main raag. There is an excellent rendition in Raag Ramkali in one of the astpadhi's (stanzas - there are 24 major stanzas in Sukhmani Sahib). His daughters' voices have been put to good use as a beautiful backdrop to his deep, dominant yet very soothing voice.

Rhythm is from the familiar tonal intricacies of the tabla. Dya Singh ensures that there is 'movement' by ensuring that no two stanzas have the same 'tala' (beat). The rhythm is further complimented with subtle touches of hand drums in different musical notes and 'telian' (hand cymbals).

The string instrument 'dilruba' is used to great impact for subtle changes in the raags and as introduction to some pieces. One such piece, a popular 'shabad' - 'Tu Thakur tum pai ardaas' has such an introduction leading to an exquisite melody in a fourteen beat rhythm cycle 'deepchandi' sending one into a timeless zone.

This double cd comes complete with a gutka (booklet) of the entire prayer in Gurmukhi, in romanised English and an English intepretation. Only limited copies are available. After this special 'run' the cd shall be launched just as a double cd without the 'gutka'.
